Everyone would prefer to avoid acid reflux. It may not be life threatening, but it can cause severe discomfort. When you have acid reflux attacks, you have to worry about everything you eat and still suffer painful episodes. Acid reflux, fortunately, is a condition that can usually be prevented. What happens in most cases is that your stomach acid and esophagus have a bad reaction to a food you’ve eaten or something you’ve done, and this causes the episode. Here are some of the major acid reflux causes and what you can do about them.
If you suffer from this condition, you should visit your doctor. You want to rule out the possibility that you have a hiatal hernia. The hiatal hernia is where the upper part of your stomach and your LES somehow get moved up above your diaphragm. The diaphragm, when everything is working correctly, is what keeps acid from rising up and out of your stomach. In this condition, however, there is nothing to keep that from happening. You need a surgical procedure to put things back into their proper place. If you don’t have the surgery, you will have to get used to this problem.
Acid reflux can also be caused by pregnancy. This is because the woman’s hormone production gets wacky and the fetus presses against the abdominal organs. The third trimester of pregnancy is the time when acid reflux is most severe. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot that you can do about the disorder while you are still pregnant. But you can look forward to feeling much better after the baby is born. Think of it as something that you can use to give your child grief later on in his or her life.
Smoking is a major acid reflux cause. There are all sorts of reasons for this. Smoking is harmful to your mucous membranes. Smoking also harms your throat muscles’ reflexes. It causes your stomach to produce more acid. It even causes you to salivate less than normally. When acid rises into your throat and mouth, saliva helps to break it down. Fortunately, you can easily prevent this type of acid reflux issue. If you stop smoking, your problem will be solved. This is not always such an easy task, of course. Remember, though, that if you quit smoking, there are many benefits aside from getting over acid reflux. It can solve a lot of other medical problems you might be having as well!
It’s very aggravating to have a chronic case of acid reflux. Even if it doesn’t prevent you from engaging in most activities, it can make you miserable when it strikes. A painful episode can be very hard to deal with. Thankfully you can do quite a lot to cut down on the acid reflux causes in your life. The causes discussed above apply to many cases.
